Born in 1934 in Marrakech, Farid Belkahia became interested in the artistic universe at a very early age, thanks notably to his father. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca and frequented other painters such as Antoine, Olek, Jeanine Teslar and Nicolas de Stael. Later, he studied scenography at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Reputed the most influential Moroccan artist of the last 50 years, he has cultivated a new visual language with many of his contemporaries, such as Mohamed Melehi or Hamidi. Farid Belkahia greatly challenged Moroccan and European predetermined conventions. His artistic own “vocabulary” consisted in formal and contextual idioms from Arabo-African scripts, from Berber culture even more. In 1962, Belkahia became the Director of the school he once attended as a student, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca. From then on, he has been able to spread his vision to generations of modern artists (such as Hamidi) and has become a corner stone of Moroccan Modern art history.
