Ahmed Cherkaoui was born on October 2nd 1934 in Bejaad, Morocco. Cherkaoui first studied at M’sid school (Koranic school) before he started learning calligraphy so as to address the needs of his family – which his father could not do anymore. He first created posters and adverts. The artist ended up leaving Morocco in order to move in Paris where he was granted a scholarship in arts. In parallel, Cherkaoui painted and worked on representing signs or symbols. At the beginning of the 60s, he observed and copied tattoos, tapestries and all kinds of patterns. Cherkaoui was also interested in Koran’s writings and other religious symbols. From 1962, a series of exhibitions in Paris and Morocco showed his talents to the world. Two years after, he started painting a spiritual Mother Nature.
In 1967, he moved back to Morocco with intent to teach painting to young students.
In 2012, Loft Art Gallery paid tribute to Cherkaoui in its book “Zoom sur les années 60”. Unfortunately, the artist died very young, at age 33.
