"Today we have a pressing need to re-ask the questions that date back to the 1960s: Who are we? Where are we going? What project of culture would we like to have? Are we from the Far or Near East, or are we grounded in our Moroccan culture? Are we Moroccans who consciously choose to be modern, without a thought for tradition, or do we not wish to lose our heritage of the past and seek to reconcile this with modern life?
Moroccan artists have voiced these questions. So it seems essential to look back upon the important moments of this debate, and upon the artistic and intellectual creations as well as their extensions over time. In the 1960s, visual artists asked questions to society and society was compelled to respond. Why was there no response? Or was the response to turn its back, and return to the past?”
