Joana Choumali | 1-54 Hong Kong 2024 - Coalescent Lights

1-54 Hong Kong is part of “1-54 Presents”, a special programme of curated exhibitions, and this edition represents its first-ever presentation in Asia.

On view at Christie’s Hong Kong from 26 - 30 March 2024, ‘Coalescent Lights’ exhibition curated by Kami Gahiga is a poetic exploration of the rich tapestry of approaches and aesthetic philosophies embedded within contemporary African art.

Joana Choumali exhibited a piece from her Albahian series derived from the Agni language to mean the first light of the day, dawn. As the morning light is at the beginning of each new day, slowly it makes every detail of the material world visible, so this practice of observation has made Joana become aware of the shift in her thoughts and her perception of realities. She witnesses the energy of the continent which keeps its people going and shape their lives, and the changes in herself. Taking pictures in the early hours of the morning to capture idilic sky motifs have become an integral part of her artistic process and the result: delicate and dreamy toiles which evoke the invisible meanings and revelations of the artist’s morning experiences.
