AMINA AGUEZNAY I FORD FOUNDATION

New York
‘Enfouissements’ (‘Acts of Burying’) (2024) by Moroccan artist Amina Agueznay, on view now in ‘Incantations, conjures encoded social connections within the layers of a flat-woven rug. Patterned on a wedding veil worn for its protective powers, the work also holds talismanic jewelry in its fibers. Aguezney’s career is similarly layered: an artist, architect, and jewelry designer, she oscillates among modes and scales, from the intricate to the expansive. Known for her collaborations with highly skilled rural craftworkers, and how she integrates significant motifs she observes on buildings, textiles, or other objects, Agueznay was recently awarded the prestigious 2024 Norval Sovereign African Art Prize for “an artist with an enduring vision of the lives and triumphs of women of the African desert.”
“My works...translate the potential of connections between people...the value of community, of the social fabric,” she has said.
